Chomping at the Bit…

I cannot wait to test out the latest addition to my shoe collection: The Lone Peak. The LPs are a trail shoe that I have been dying to try, and they just so happened to arrive while I was away in San Diego.

Altra Zero Drop Lone Peak Women's I took them out of the box and instantly fell in love with the color combo—I know seriously, huh? Aside from the color combo, the Lone Peaks sport all of the awesome Altra Zero Drop features in addition to a toe bumper, stone guard, trail rudder, and heel claw.

I am sincerely hoping that I will be able to sneak out for a birthday trail run on Friday, so I can test these babies out! I will let you know what I think after I take them for a test run,

In shocking weather news, we are expecting  more snow today. I proudly call myself a New Englander, but I will say that I am about done with the snow for this winter. Winking smile Maybe I am just a bit bitter since I just got back from San Diego!

I am thinking of doing the Seagull Six this Sunday (it’s actually 5.74 miles), If I do, I don’t really have a set goal, rather I would like to keep it under 8-minute miles. We’ll see what happens—hopefully I get to toe the line!

I am an Ambassador for Altra Zero Drop shoes.

A Valentine’s Gift to Myself!

I love chocolate and other treats, but this Valentine´s Day I decided to buy a running present for myself! I have resigned myself to the fact that there will undoubtedly be some very cold outside running days ahead.

I have a couple of pairs of fleece pants that I am not super psyched about running in, so I splurged another pair of running-specific pants. I love my Hard Mountain Gear pants, but one favorite pair of pants is not going to be enough for winter running.

IMG_20130214_073056_011Of course, Running Warehouse had to go and run a Valentine’s Day sale. I am such a sucker for running gear sales! Anyhow, I picked out a pair of the Brooks Vapor Dry 2 running pants.

I think they look cute, in addition to being warm and functional. I also like the zippered back pocket for stashing keys or GU. I also got an Amphipod 12 oz. handheld for shorter distance runs.

My husband clearly knows me too well. My first stop every morning is the coffee maker for my freshly brewed coffee (I program it every night!).

Next to the coffee maker was a pound of Dunkin’ Donuts French Vanilla coffee and a DD’s mug with a Rhode Island scene on it. Made me a little nostalgic for the Ocean State!

Running/training related: We got a few inches of snow on Wednesday night, but I was DETERMINED to get outside to run. Luckily the sun was shining and it was warm enough to melt the snow of the road surfaces and the bike path.

I did a 6-miler along the beach and then on the bike path to Woods Hole and back. It was all clear except for the tail end, when I felt like I was on a trail. I had to run in the snow and duck under a large tree that had fallen across the path during the blizzard!

What a great feeling to be running outside again. I am also super psyched that my sister arrived from California Wednesday night for a week! It’s going to be a great weekend!

So Excited to be an Altra Ambassador!

Yesterday, I was super excited to find out that I got selected to be an Altra Ambassador for 2013! Most of you guys have heard about my love for Altra shoes on different occasions, but if not, feel free to catch up HERE and HERE. I can’t wait to help spread the Altra love!

ProvisionessI love my Altras because they are super comfy (nice wide toe box) and help me keep my natural foot strike. For anyone who has suffered common running injuries, they are definitely worth looking into. The company is growing and is constantly adding new shoes to their line.

I am very excited to see the Spring 2013 line-up! I made it out the door at 5:35 for yesterday morning’s run, and by the time you read this, I will be back for my second in a row.

It’s definitely going to take some getting used to running in the dark. Thank God for my awesome headlamp. I got more than one adrenaline rush yesterday—thanks to the idiot who beeped at me. Nothing like being startled when you are running in the dark! Sad smile

I will admit that it felt so good to have a half hour to enjoy the sound of silence and drink my coffee prior to heading out the door. I could definitely get used to this!

Weather Chaos!

I will preface this post by saying that I ran today at 3:30 p.m. in a skirt and a long sleeve top. No gloves, no hat, no nothing! The weather was CRAZY windy the night before last—gusts up to 60 mph and it poured. True to form, it never snowed on Cape Cod! ;-) The wind tapered off by mid-morning, and we could actually see some sunshine peeking through.

I headed out late afternoon on a 7-miler. While I felt nice and toasty for the first half, when I hit the beach it was a whole different story! I turned around at 4 miles and ran straight into the bone chilling wind. Thank goodness I had on a long sleeve half zip!

photo (31)I actually took my new Illuminite half zip out for a test drive. I got it as a gift from my dad, and I LOVE it. I am really psyched about all of the reflectivity, and combined with my head lamp, I felt good about my almost dark run.

Yesterday morning the boys and I headed up to join the Wareham YMCA. As sad as I am to be leaving the Kent County YMCA, I am happy to be joining another Y family. James was super psyched about the indoor pool with the spiral slide and the fact that they have an outdoor pool. Another cool perk—an indoor rock climbing wall. Smile

Since it’s a bit further away, I know we will probably not be there quite as often, but I love the new Y! We are off this morning for Philly for the wedding festivities! I can’t wait to get all glammed up and celebrate with my BFF!

Trying to Rein in the Holiday Spending on My Running Obsession!

Seriously, why does Running Warehouse have to do a 12 Days of Christmas?? Some of the deals have been too good to pass up, and I LOVE Running Warehouse. Who doesn’t love FREE two-day shipping? My hubs actually let me order a Brooks Running backpack the other day for an early Christmas gift (thanks honey!). He got it for $21.77 instead of $40!

Brooks backpackI know that running is supposed to be a lower cost activity compared to some sports, but some times it doesn’t seem that way! Winking smile Between new shoes every 350-500 miles, appropriate running gear for the season, GU, etc.; it seems to add up quickly!

But, you know what? I love running retail therapy! When my new shoes arrived last week—I was so excited and couldn’t wait to wear them running. It’s pretty much like that with every piece of running gear I get!

I guess it could be worse. I could have an unhealthy addiction or an insatiable need to purchase $500 pairs of shoes or handbags. Winking smile I will probably buy myself a few more running Christmas gifts this year.

On a running related note, I am back at it after the back spasms of the weekend! I went to the chiropractor on Tuesday, and he said it was fine to run. He gave me some good stretching and strengthening exercises to do. It was so great to sweat again after an unexpected four days off!

Have you bought yourself any running-related Christmas gifts? If so, what did you buy?

(Run)nerd Alert!

I love getting new running shoes. It’s sort of like Christmas morning for me (seriously). I especially like when the shoes I want to get have some kickin’ colors. My new Mizuno Wave Rider 16s will arrive today, and I am super excited. My other pair has about 325 miles on them, so I would like to work the new ones into the rotation.

I chose the aqua color combo—they will definitely be the most colorful shoes I have sported in quite a long time. Smile I think this weekend may be their inaugural run!

We are headed out on the Polar Express tonight—I can’t wait to see the kids on the train! We will be down on the Cape for the weekend too. There is an annual Christmas Party on Saturday night, and I want to take the boys to see the Village Green decorated for the holidays.

Falmouth has always decorated the Village Green for Christmas, and I used to love walking down at night as a child to see the lights. I can’t wait to continue the tradition with the boys. SmileThere will also be some seaside running happening—hopefully with Clarke too!

Here’s to heading off for some holiday fun on the Cape!

My Running Christmas List – 2012

I have finally finished compiling my running Christmas list for this year.

  1. Skirt Sports Toasty Mitts Arm Warmers – Umm- genius in my book! Since I have Raynaud’s (results in poor circulation in my hands and feet), I need to focus on keeping my hands warm when the temperature starts dropping. I love my Brooks Adapt Running Gloves, but these definitely caught my eye. I love arm sleeves because I sweat A LOT! I tried them out last weekend on a long run and I loved them! I actually wore them under a half zip instead of wearing a jacket. Skirt Sports gear is always well made and they think of all the little details. One of the arm warmers has a pocket for phone, keys, GU, etc. and there are little silicone skirt sports icons to keep them in place on your upper arm.
  2. Saucony Drylete Ponytail Headband ViZiPro- Sometimes it’s chilly enough to freeze your ears, but you still want the ability to get rid of some heat through your head. Enter the headband—with a ponytail hole, it’s perfect in my book!
  3. Yaktrax Pro—I never got these last year, but I meant to! Since I will be running outside a lot more this winter, I really hope Santa brings them for me!
  4. Nathan Sprint 10 oz Handheld—Sometimes (especially in colder weather) I want to bring along some water, but I don’t need the 20 oz. quick draw or my belt—this would be perfect. I think it would also be great for a 5K race!
  5. Brooks Women’s Infiniti Tight II—Along with the Yaktrax Pro, these warm weather tights are tops on my list of winter running needs. Running along the water in the winter can get quite nippy. I need some nice warm tights!
  6. Running bibs display with mantra: Running On The Wall—I am not big on displaying my medals , but I keep all of my race bibs. I like to write my times on the back and my age place, etc. Hopefully the hubs will get this as one of my Christmas gifts. I like that you can choose the paint color and/or personalize it!
  7. Marathon Chick Skirt by Skirt Sports—This is pretty much the only skirt I run in any more. It’s so comfortable and without the compression shorts (it has spankies instead), I don’t get any chafing on long runs. I LOVE them and would like another one.
  8. GU Energy Gel– I have been loving the Chocolate Outrage, Mint Chocolate, and Vanilla Bean! Just had the vanilla last weekend, and it reminded me of vanilla pudding!

What’s on YOUR running Christmas list??

Skirt Sports provided 30 Something Mother Runner with a pair or Toasty Mitts Arm Warmers, so I could try them out and share my opinions with you.

Mother Runners Should Definitely Check Out These Undies!

I discovered Dear Kate underwear at BlogHer and immediately thought how useful they would be for a mother runner. Chances are, if you have been pregnant, you have experienced stress incontinence/discharge/period overflow. If this is TMI, feel free not to read on! Winking smile

When I was pregnant with my second son, I remember kneeling over the toilet simultaneously vomiting and peeing my pants—not a pretty sight! That was my first introduction to stress urinary incontinence or SUI. I could have used some Dear Kates back then!

Fast forward several years, and a local women’s start-up called Dear Kate has created a line of super comfy, stylish, AND leak-proof underwear! I tried out a pair of the Leading Lady bikini mini, and they were so comfy! They were very breathable and flattering.

Thankfully I no longer suffer from SUI, but I have all confidence they would be my best friend if I did! The underwear line sports three different layers: a leak resistant outer layer and two wicking inner layers. The Dear Kate underwear come in five different styles: bikini, hipster, cheeky, thong, and high-rise.

All styles are currently available for pre-order (shipping December 5 shipping). The sizing runs a little small. I usually wear a size 5 in underwear, but they recommended I try a medium—which was perfect. They would make a great stocking stuffer! Winking smile Visit their website HERE and connect with them on Facebook and Twitter. You can use the code “motherrunner” at checkout for $10 off through December 31!

I received a pair of underwear from Dear Kate for the purpose of this review. All opinions and writing are 100% my own.

Happy Feet!

Last Thursday, I had the opportunity to head down to Olympic Physical Therapy in Wakefield for an analysis of my feet and biomechanics and for a customized shoe fitting.

I was more than a little hesitant to have my feet/gait evaluated, especially since I am trying hard to run in a more natural way–using more minimalist shoes.

When I arrived at Olympic Physical Therapy (OPT), I was greeted and introduced to Bill, a Certified Pedorthist who works at OPT. If you want to read up a little more on what a pedorthist does, click HERE.

Bill started off my evaluation by asking what type of shoes I currently run in, how long I have been running, surface I run on, etc. He then took a detailed look at my feet and my gait. He pointed out a few things that surprised me.

He mentioned that I had high arches, something I have know for a long time but kind of forgot about! Next we looked at my toes—in all their glory! Winking smile I have been having some skin shredding/blisters on my big toes for quite a while now, and I think we finally figured out where it is coming from.

I have pretty decent flexibility when it comes to dorsiflexion of my big toe holding my foot out in front of me, but it’s a different story when my foot gets push back from the ground or another solid surface. When that happens, my big toe is not as flexible and is having a hard time doing what it’s supposed to do when I run.

Instead of stabilizing my arch in the mid stance and during take off or propulsion, it’s kind of trying to gain traction. I know this probably sounds overly scientific, so the net is that my big toe is not doing its job to the fullest extent.

The other thing Bill noticed is that when my foot is relaxed, my big toe drops lower than my other toes. My feet are pretty neutral, my arches just needed some more support and a little bit of modification for my big toe, especially on the left foot.

The bad news is that although I love running in my barefoot shoes, I am going to have to take a break from them for a while. The good news is that I  found a different Mizuno shoe (the Wave Rider) that works for my foot and with some additional arch support, running has felt much easier. OPT has many different shoes and inserts at the store, so you can get fitted and purchase your shoes at the office as well!

I guess what happens when you have really high arches and attempt running barefoot is that the force of your foot strike is not dispersed as well and is therefore absorbed by other areas of the feet like the ball of the foot. This may explain why I was having an issue with Morton’s neuroma on my left foot!

I have run for about a week in my new shoes/arch support and am feeling really good. The metatarsal pain I had previously has decreased. Upon the suggestion of Bill, I also purchased a pair of casual shoes that had more arch support for me to wear during the day (more on my Danskos later!).

After checking in with Bill, I got a brief evaluation from Guerrino, a physical therapist at OPT. He checked my range of motion and confirmed something I had suspected: I do have a slight difference in leg length. However, it would do more harm than good to correct it, so I am fine the way I am!

Ashley gave me some stretches to do to help with my hip flexibility (in addition to doing an outstanding job entertaining my kids!). I have been doing my exercises dutifully to allow my hips to rotate the way I need them to. I am not giving up on my minimalist shoes, rather I think I am just going to have to tread carefully (pun intended) by introducing them more gradually. I will use the Mizunos as my regular shoe, as I continue to work in the minimalist shoes.

I am so glad I got over my initial skepticism and went to get evaluated and fit for shoes. I think I learned some valuable things about my feet and running and how to reduce injury. You can check out Olympic Physical Therapy’s website and Facebook page for more information and a list of their five locations throughout Rhode Island.

P.S. Shalane Flanagan gets her orthotics from OPT! Winking smile

30 Something Mother Runner received a biomechanical screening, shoe fitting, shoes and inserts for the purposes of this review. All opinions are 100% my own.

Minimalist Shoes for Kids?

Yesterday, I went to get my older son new sneakers for school this year. I am doing a little experiment. I decided to get him a pair of minimalist shoes, rather than the standard Stride Rite light up sneakers with the bigger heel.

One of the main reasons I opted to try out a minimal shoe for my son is that children actually land naturally on the forefoot—they have great running form. This tends to change around the age of 5 when they move into more “traditional” shoes.

I would like to see how James does in the minimalist shoe, and if he likes them a lot and they seem to work, I will keep him in a similar shoe. Perhaps he will avoid becoming a heel striker and some of the problems that can accompany running that way. He loves to run EVERYWHERE, and I want to continue encouraging that.

If he can continue to run with the correct foot strike, who knows what will happen? Winking smile So which did we choose? Well, there are not a ton of options in the minimalist children’s shoe market as of this writing. We did, however, find a Merrell Barefoot shoe that worked for James.

Our local REI had the children’s version of the Merrell Trail Glove and the model we wound up getting—the Flux Glove. The Trail Glove didn’t seem to fit his heel quite right. When we tried the Flux Glove, the heel fit perfectly. He was so cute zipping around the store!

In addition to the Merrell Barefoot shoes, there are now Vibram KSOs for children, which REI also carries. The downside: the shoes we ended up choosing were $65. That being said, I don’t skimp on shoes because it’s something they wear every day. I think good shoes are really important, so I am willing to splurge on those. Smile
