Since my oldest starts kindergarten tomorrow, it’s my first time packing school lunches/snacks. J will be bringing his lunch every day except Friday, which is pizza day at school (and I have heard it’s quite popular!).

Isn’t it crazy that they now do lunch money online? Apparently we can prepay for lunch and not have to worry about sending money in! Perfect! But, back to homemade school lunches and snacks.

rubbermaid lunch bloxI spent some time finding the right containers for lunch, since I like them to be reusable and I prefer compartments to keep it all together and keep it interesting!

horizon milkHere are a few of my faves:

  • Rubbermaid Lunch blox– I love that these have smaller containers that easily snap on top and that it has a built-in ice pack!
  • Small Thermos containers—I love that these come with characters too. It’s nice to be able to send a hot lunch in the winter!
  • Smart Planet Collapsible Lunch boxes—These are great space savers and they are BPA-free and dishwasher/microwave safe!
  • Lifefactory glass water bottles– I have one of these for myself and love it—no metallic taste and BPA-free and dishwasher safe. The silicone sleeve protects the glass bottle from breaking when it’s dropped—yes, I have tested it! Smile

While J usually eats the same thing for lunch almost every day – peanut butter and jelly – I am going to try my hardest to switch it up. He loves his 100% juice boxes, but I like to make sure he gets milk too—so the milk boxes that don’t need to be refrigerated are awesome! We like the Horizon organic ones (he especially loves the chocolate milk!).

odwalla kidsWe also discovered that Odwalla now makes kids bars, which are a great option for snack time. We have to send in a snack in addition to lunch. The boys loved all of the flavors: Banana Dunk, Chocolate Chip Kick, and Strawberry Score. They are a great source of fiber, whole grains, and calcium!

What are your kids lunch box faves?

  1. My second grader brings PB&J, applesauce, yogurt, water (in a metal thermos – all he drinks at home is milk), and a snack to school every day. He occasionally will get hot lunch (paid online too!!!).

My daughter in kindergarten gets lunch at school, however I send in 50 cents a day for milk money (she only occasionally drinks milk at home) and a snack for afternoon. The snack is a fruit, this week it was grapes.
